`So, it turns out that almost every one of my pots didn’t turn out as planned. The pot that took me the longest to make (and killed my time like nobody’s business) was the brown pinch pot. This piece was inspired by a pot made of tiles I have back at my home in Hawaii, sitting on a cabinet in front of my door. This pinch pot was a little more forgivable; I knew from the very beginning that I wouldn’t be able to portray the way the tiles reflected those gorgeous yellow, green, and orange hues (it looks better than it sounds). I think the most important thing I learned from this pot is that I need to stop being a perfectionist—working on that in AP Drawing as well!
My pierced pinch pot was definitely a lot prettier in my head, but as I got short on time and messed up with the glaze, I had to improvise. Oh, the beauty of acrylic—the paint I always resort to when something needs to be covered up! This pot was inspired by a TV show I stopped watching because it gave me one of the scariest nightmares of my life: Pretty Little Liars. One of the blind characters makes a pot (on the wheel…) in an attempt to recreate her memories of what it looked like when she went underwater in a pool and looked up at the sun. Of course, she had a light inside.
Lastly, the white pinch pot with the bone on top was made for my dog, Joey. I remembered that we had a little ceramic food bowl for him. I never really made up my mind whether I’d really use my pot or not, but I knew I wanted to do something that was white with what was supposed to be an under glaze watercolor wash. Of course, this pot didn’t turn out as planned either. The white and blue under glaze didn’t stay on as it got fired, and I had to resort to acrylic again! This one fared better than the Ivory pinch pot, though!
